Troy State wins one; loses oneJoe Zwierzchowski The Troy State University women's basketball team came away with another win as they came from behind to beat Florida Atlantic University in the final three minutes. The Lady Trojans (7-9, 3-3) hit their last eight free throws to stay ahead of the Lady Panthers (6-7, 2-3) in the final minutes of Saturday's game. That combined with four players scoring in double figures gave TSU just the edge it needed. Pacing TSU was Lakeisha Parrish. She scored 26 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, had three steals and one assist. Samantha Tomlinson scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Heather Lanior was good for 14 points as well as nine rebounds, two steals and five assists. Kira McWaine was the other Lady Trojan who scored in double figures. She posted up 11 points, four boards, four assists and one steal in her 25 minutes of play. On Thursday, Jan. 15, TSU played host to the number 21 team in the nation. Florida International University (14-1, 4-1) handed the Lady Trojans an 89-64 beating in Sartain Hall. Despite shooting 51 percent from the floor, the Lady Trojans found themselves on the short end of a lop sided score. "The final score does not reflect our 51 field goal percentage," said Jerry Hester, head coach. "We had a few players coming off the injury list and a team on the court that hasn't played together much. These two factors contributed to the fatigue at the end of the game and the 27-14 turnover ratio." The Lady Trojans were able to keep within five to nine points of the Golden Panthers through most of the game, but a 23-5 run in the final six minutes sealed the win for FIU. Tomlinson led TSU with her 19 point performance. She also picked up five rebounds and three blocked shots. "We just couldn't stay mentally focused towards the end of the game," said Tomlinson. "We were very tired, the starters are playing 35 to 40 minutes and that's tough on an individual. We were in the game until the six minute mark and then we just broke down as they got hot. Now that we've seen what they do I think we'll beat them next time. They are beatable, they're in the Top 25 because of the kind of teams they play against." Parrish was the only other Troy State player to reach double figures as she scored 16 points in the defeat. Parrish got five rebounds and two steals as well. Next up for the Lady Trojans is a road trip to face Georgia State University in Atlanta on Thursday, Jan. 22. The tip-off for this TAAC Western Division matchup is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Return to the top of the Sports Section |

The Trojans(4-13, 2-4) defeated Mercer University 71-67 on Jan. 17, in Sartain Hall with help from three seniors. Terry Pickett, Donshea Mayfield and Eric "Boo" Neal scored in double figures as did Aldo Hudson. Pickett scored 19 points to lead the team. He also collected 11 rebounds and grabbed two steals in the win. Hudson scored 14 points and dished out four assists in his 37 minutes on the floor. Mayfield contributed 11 points, and Neal scored 10. The leading all scorer was Mercer's Mark Adamson, who scored 20 points in the game. TSU had its problems throughout the contest. Troy shot just 36 percent for the game and hit only one-of-twenty three pointers. With the Trojans down 35-32 at the half, it was the defense that was key in the come from behind win. Mayfield drew two fouls late in the game and picked up two steals to lift Troy State over the Bears. On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Trojans played host to another TAAC opponent, Georgia State University. Behind the guidance of Head Coach Lefty Driesell, GSU topped Troy State 74-58. The win gave Dresiell his 690th career victory. The score at halftime was 31-30 in favor of Georgia State, and it looked as if TSU could pull off the upset. Thanks to a 23-8 Georgia State run to close the game Troy added another mark in their loss column. "I thought we played pretty well in the first half and parts of the second half," said Maestri. "They did an outstanding job down the stretch to get the win." Neal and Pickett each scored 14 points for TSU. Neal pulled down nine rebounds and added one assist for the game. Pickett grabbed seven boards. Hudson was the only other Trojan in double figures as he put in 13 points, totalled four rebounds and dished out three assists in the contest. Georgia State had four players in double digits as Shellord Pinkett and Maurice Robertson each scored 16 points. "I have to give Troy credit," said Driesell. "We came out in the second half and played much better on both ends of the court." Next up for the Trojans will be another TAAC match-up. Centenary College will come to Sartain Hall on Friday, Jan. 23, for a 7:05 p.m. tip-off. The game will be aired live on Fox SportSouth. Return to the top of the Sports Section |
