Student Organizations

Any undergraduate or graduate student eligible for membership in Phi Alpha Theta an honorary history society should contact Dr. Norma Mitchell at ext. 3412.

The Silver Wings Society will be holding an informational meeting Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in McCartha room 204-A. If you want to get involved on campus, like to do community service, want to meet new people, and gain leadership opportunities, then this organization may be what you are looking for. Internships

Minority students seeking careers as newspaper journalists are invited to apply for the Newhouse Graduate Fellowship/Internship in Newspaper Journalism for Minorities. It underwrites master's level study at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication of Syracuse University while providing on-the-job training at the Newhouse Newspapers. To be eligible for the 1998-2000 competition, a candidate must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field other than journalism (with a B average or higher) by June 15, 1998, be a United States citizen and either African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian or Native American. Undergraduate and graduate students studying geology, geography, computer science, computer graphics, oceanography, civil engineering, biology, chemistry or related fields are eligible for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Sciences Internship Program. The internship offers the unique opportunity to do hands-on research with some of the nation's top scientists at one of the USGS facilities in the United States. Appointments are available for all levels of education ranging from two years of college training to the postdoctoral level. Wednesday, Jan. 28, Dallas County Police Department, Texas, will have an information table in the Adams Center lobby from 2 - 6 p.m. for anyone interested in law enforcement.

Tuesday, Feb. 10, Veterans Canteen Service will be interviewing Alumni, Winter 1998 and Spring 1998 marketing, management and general business graduates for an Assistant Canteen Manager. Food or retail experience is helpful. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Wednesday, Feb. 11, Cintas will be interviewing alumni, Winter 1998 and Spring 1998 graduates of any major with a 2.75 and above overall GPA for a Sales Trainee and Management Trainee. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Thursday, Feb. 12, Northwest Financial Services will be interviewing alumni and Winter 1998 business majors with a 2.6 and above overall GPA for a Management Trainee Program for Credit Manager Position. Prescreening is required. Contact Career Services for details.

Tuesday, Feb. 17, Enterprise Rent-A-Car will be interviewing Alumni, Winter 1998 and Spring 1998 graduates of any major with interest for a Management Trainee position. Prescreening is required. Contact Career Services for more information.

Career Services has received the Job Choices 1998 publications that are free to all registered candidates. These publications are available in the Career Services office in the Adams Center room 110.

Scholarships

Mona Padgett, Kappa Delta president, presents Amy Smith with a $1,000 scholarship for excellence in scholastics and leadership. This scholarship was awarded to a TSU Panhellenic member by the Kappa Delta Foundation.

TSU students interested in competing for 3-year and 2-year Army ROTC scholarships for the 1998-1999 school year need to act fast. The competitive scholarship window opened up Jan. 1, and students have only until March 31 to complete their applications. The scholarships pay tuition, mandatory fees, $150 per quarter towards books and a $150 per month stipend during the school year. For more information, contact Maj. The Fund for American Studies is currently accepting applications for scholarships to its 1998 summer Institutes at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. More than 100 scholarships will be awarded based on both merit and need. Several scholarships are designated specifically for residents of Ala. The Institutes will be held from June 7 to July 25. Any undergraduate at an accredited four-year university in Mississippi or Alabama can apply for the 1998 Year of the Ocean Poster Design Competition. The entry requirements are 1) individuals must submit camera-ready art suitable for a 17.5 inch by 23 inch poster. The poster will be printed on 80 pound enamel paper with text on back, 2) design may be one color front and back or suitable for 4-color processing front with one color back, 3) design must incorporate the official YOTO logo and the individual logos of the three sponsoring institutions, 4) design must be suitable for distribution to a K-12 audience and 5) individuals may submit multiple entries. The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance- College Bound is an organization that supplies the public with over 700 different private scholarships sources. Many scholarships pay the entire tuition; others can be applied towards tuition, living expenses and/or other fees. Most scholarships can be used at junior colleges, career and vocational schools, 4 year colleges, graduate schools, medical and law schools. Glacier Park will be hiring 900 college students for summer jobs. Jobs include a large variety of hotel positions, such as hotel front desk clerks, room attendants, cooks, wait persons and tour guides/drivers. Activities

Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr. and Phi Alpha Theta will be sponsoring a concert featuring Bobby Horton, Civil War Singer, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. in the Adams Center Theatre. No admission charge.

Alabama Dance Theatre presents Alabama Ballet in one performance of "Dracula" Friday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Davis Theatre for Performing Arts. Ticket prices range from $10-$25. For more information, call (334) 241-2800.
