Scholarships

Attending Troy University's Hall School of Journalism and Communication is a great investment in your future. While Troy's tuition compares favorably to colleges and universities around the nation, many students are interested in finding out information about Troy's scholarship programs.

Troy University has an excellent scholarship program for incoming undergraduate students. Information about Troy's scholarship program may be found at: http://www.troy.edu/financialaid/.

There are several scholarships available through the Hall School of Journalism and Communication. Students may get detailed information and applications for the following scholarships through the school's office. Most, but not all, of these scholarships are for students currently in the program. Current HSJC scholarships are:

Tropolitan Scholarships

This scholarship is open to both new and current Troy University students. It offers half-tuition and quarter-tuition waivers. In order to receive these scholarships, recipients must meet, maintain and agree to the following conditions:

  • Be admitted unconditionally to Troy University.
  • Enroll full-time taking a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
  • Perform duties as assigned as a Tropolitan staff member at least five hours a week.
  • Grant permission to Troy University to publicize the awarding of the scholarship.
  • Have served a minimum of one semester working on the Tropolitan as a volunteer or have served as an editor for a high school newspaper.

Recipients of a Tropolitan scholarship must maintain a 2.5/4.0 GPA while making progress towards a Troy University degree. An Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the Tropolitan scholarship application form may be obtained here.

Palladium Scholarship

This scholarship is also open to both new and current Troy University students. It also offers half-tuition and quarter-tuition waivers. In order to receive these scholarships, recipients must meet, maintain and agree to the following conditions:

  • Be admitted unconditionally to Troy University.
  • Enroll full-time taking a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
  • Perform duties as assigned as a Palladium staff member at least five hours a week.
  • Have served one semester on the Palladium as a volunteer or have served as the editor or on the staff of a high school yearbook.

Recipients of a Palladium scholarship must maintain a 2.5/4.0 GPA while making progress towards a Troy University degree. An Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the Palladium scholarship application form may be obtained here.

Journalism Alumni Association Merit Scholarship

The Journalism Alumni Association grants this scholarship and typically pays $300. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a full-time student pursuing a print or broadcast major course of study in the School of Journalism and Communication.

The recipient should be actively involved in the student newspaper, yearbook, television station and/or other professionally related endeavor. Activities should also include membership in one of the professional chartered organizations in the School of Journalism and Communication.

Kyle Ridgway Scholarship

This scholarship honors the memory of Kyle Ridgway, a former executive producer for Troy University's TV station. The cash amount awarded to the recipient varies yearly.

To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must be pursuing a broadcast journalism undergraduate degree in the Hall School of Journalism and Communication and must be involved with TrojanVision TV.

Jess Jordan Journalism Scholarship

This scholarship honors the memory of Jess Jordan, a former manager of radio station WTBF in Troy, Ala. The Jess Jordan Journalism Scholarship is funded by gifts from Jess Jordan's family, friends, Radio Station WTBF and HSJC alumni to Troy University's Journalism Foundation. The cash amount of this scholarship varies yearly.

The recipient of this scholarship must be a legal resident of Alabama pursuing a broadcast or print major or minor from the Hall School of Journalism and Communication. He or she must be an enrolled freshman, sophomore or junior, and be planning a career in journalism.

Journalism Foundation Scholarship

Journalism Foundation Scholarship is offered by Troy University's Journalism Foundation. The student receiving this scholarship will serve as the editor of the Hall Monitor, a newsletter sent to the Hall School of Journalism's alumni. The scholarship pays $250 per term and may be renewed.

Any full-time student pursuing a major course of study in the Hall School of Journalism and Communication is eligible for this scholarship. Preference will be given to print majors. The applicant must be at least a first semester junior, andintend on pursuing a career in journalism, in any of its varied media.

The recipient should have above average computer skills, news writing experience, some knowledge of page make-up, and at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA in all college work.

Chancellor's Fellowships

The Troy University Chancellor's Fellowship is funded by Troy University's Foundation. There are restrictions on how many Troy University Foundation Scholarships a student may receive. You may need to investigate these restrictions if you are interested in this scholarship and are currently on another Foundation scholarship. The Chancellor's Fellowship currently pays $1,800 per year ($900 per term).

Recipients of the Chancellor's Fellowship will be required to serve as a lab monitor for the the Journalism Lab.

Two Chancellor's Fellowships are available for journalism students each academic year. To be eligible, a student must be a rising senior, have at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA, and be proficient on the computer system in the journalism lab. Recipients work an average of 14 hours per week in the journalism lab.

Technology Newsletter Scholarship

Connections is Troy University's technology newsletter and is distributed to Troy University's faculty and administration. The holder of this scholarship is the editor of the Connections newsletter.

The recipient of the Connections scholarship should have writing and editing skills, some knowledge of the Macintosh computer system and a willingness to learn about page layout and design.

The stipend for the Connections scholarship is payable at the rate of $300 per semester and may be renewable.

All Hall School of Journalism and Communication majors (freshman, sophomore, junior or senior) are eligible for this scholarship. Preference will be given to students who have completed or are completing the Hall School's Reporting class.

Applicants must be making satisfactory progress towards his or her degree. This means that applicants must have and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.5.

Applicants must be self-starters and able to complete projects with minimal supervision.

The student awarded the Connections scholarship must be a full-time student on the Troy campus during the coming fall and spring semesters.

Additional Financial Assistance

Journalism students may get additional financial assistance by applying for and receiving a paid position at the Tropolitan or TrojanVision-TV. Students who sell advertisements for the newspaper receive a 20 percent commission.

Other financial aid announcements are made by journalism and communication faculty members and are posted in the School of Journalism and Communication.
