Scholarships:
Students may get detailed information and applications
for the following scholarships through the Hall School of Journalism: |
Tropolitan Scholarships
Half-tuition and quarter-tuition - In order to receive these one-half or one-quarter
tuition scholarships, recipients must meet, maintain, and agree to the
following conditions:
* Be admitted unconditionally to Troy University.
* Enroll full-time taking a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
* Perform duties as a Tropolitan staff member at least 5 hours a week.
* Grant permission to Troy University to publicize the awarding of the scholarship.
* Have served one semester on the Tropolitan as a volunteer or have
served as the editor of a high school newspaper.
Trop scholarships are awarded on the basis of previous or current service
to a school newspaper. Recipients must maintain a 2.5/4.0 GPA.
Palladium Scholarship
Half-tuition and quarter tuition -
- In order to receive these one-half or one-quarter
tuition scholarships, recipients must meet, maintain, and agree to the
following conditions:
* Be admitted unconditionally to Troy University.
* Enroll full-time taking a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
* Perform duties as a Palladium staff member at least 5 hours a week.
* Have served one semester on the Palladium as a volunteer or have
served as the editor or on the staff of a high school yearbook.
Palladium scholarships are awarded on the basis of previous or current service
to a school yearbook. Recipients must maintain a 2.5/4.0 GPA.
Journalism Alumni Association Merit Scholarship
$300 - Full-time students pursuing a major course
of study in the School of Journalism are eligible. The recipient should
be actively involved in the student newspaper, yearbook, television station
and/or other professionally related endeavor. Activities should also include
membership in one of the professional chartered organizations in the School
of Journalism.
Kyle Ridgway Scholarship
Cash, amount varies yearly - Recipient must be
pursuing a broadcast journalism undergraduate major in
the Hall School of Journalism. Recipient must be involved with TSU-TV.
Jess Jordan Journalism Scholarship
Cash, amount varies yearly - Recipient must be
a legal resident of Alabama pursuing a major or minor course of study in
the Hall School of Journalism. He or she must be an enrolled freshman, sophomore
or junior, and to the best of his or her knowledge and intent be planning
a career in journalism.
Journalism Foundation Scholarship
$750 ($250 per term) - Any full-time student pursuing a major
course of study in the Hall School of Journalism is eligible. The applicant
must be at least a first semester junior, and to the best of his or her
knowledge and intent be pursuing a career in journalism, in any of its
varied media.
The recipient will assist in the production of a departmental newsletter
and other journalism alumni activities. The recipient should have above
average typing skills, news writing experience, some knowledge of the computer
system and page make-up, and at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA in all college work.
Chancellor's Fellowships
$1,800 per academic year - Two Chancellor's Fellowships
are available for journalism students each academic year. To be eligible,
a student must be a rising senior, have at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA, and be
proficient on the computer system in the journalism lab. Recipients work
an average of 10 hours per week in the journalism lab.
Technology Newsletter Fellowship
$300 per academic semester - One fellowship is
available to a journalism student who is experienced in newsletter writing
and design. This student will write and produce a technology newsletter
to be published four times a year.
Additional Financial Assistance Journalism students may get additional
financial assistance by applying for and receiving a paid position at the
Tropolitan or TSU-TV. Students who sell advertisements for the newspaper
receive a 20 percent commission. Other financial aid announcements are made by
journalism faculty and posted in the School of Journalism.

Student
Organizations:
Society of Professional Journalists
SPJ was founded in 1909 and is the largest organization representing
journalists in the U.S. Its 14,000 members are professional journalists,
students and journalism educators. The Troy University Chapter of
SPJ (TSU-SPJ), Delta Sigma Chi, is affiliated with the national organization
and is among the most active student chapters in the country. It's been
named regional chapter of the year four times, had members and advisers
elected to the national board, and developed a program for reaffiliating
former student SPJ members with the national organization, a plan which
has been recognized by the national board. TSU-SPJ's members do numerous
community service projects and host a Freedom of Information panel each
year.
Public Relations Council of Alabama
Membership is open to all students. Members gain experience by working
with campus and community groups developing publicity, advertising and
related communications. The society also fosters a relationship between
students and professional organizations in the region. Members may apply
for scholarships and internships through the society, and several members
have been recognized for their outstanding academic achievements in the
only national honorary society for advertising students, Alpha Delta Sigma.
National Broadcasting Society/Alpha Epsilon Rho
NBS/AERho is the national broadcasting society, and membership in the student
chapter is open to broadcast journalism majors. Members may apply for scholarships,
internships and awards through the organization. Members have the chance
to meet broadcast professionals and learn about topics such as resume tapes,
power reporting and employment possibilities.
Journalism Student Advisory Council
The JSAC is made up of the presidents of journalism organizations,
the editor and the business manager of The Tropolitan, and the news director
and the producer of WTSU-TV. The Council serves as a liaison between the
students and the dean on matters pertaining to the School of Journalism.

Hall School of Journalism Activities:
Spring Symposium
The annual spring symposium has given students the opportunity to meet
and hear outstanding journalists and other nationally recognized professionals.
Panelists have included Charles Jaco, CNN correspondent; Linda Ellerbee,
formerly of NBC; George Gerbner of the University of Pennsylvania; Nicholas
Johnson, former Federal Communications Commissioner, and James J. Kilpatrick,
nationally syndicated columnist.
The Alabama Excellence in Journalism Awards (formerly known as
the Hector Awards)
The Alabama Excellence in Journalism Awards are given yearly to Alabamians
active in journalism who have distinguished themselves through meritorious
service to their profession, their communities, their state, or their nation.
Past winners who have visited the campus have included the Pulitzer Prize
winning editorial page staff of the Birmingham News and a reporting team
of the Alabama Journal.
Student and Alumni Awards Banquet
The annual awards banquet is held in the spring. Student scholarship
and other award winners are recognized. Beginning in 1993, outstanding
alumni in the fields of print, broadcast, public relations and advertising
are recognized.
High School Workshop
The school hosts an annual high school journalism workshop in the fall
covering reporting, publishing, photography, advertising and other topics.
